10 Years Old!

It seems like yesterday we walked into what was our new office and warehouse looking at the huge empty space thinking, “How on earth are we going to fill this!”  But once we had the coffee machine in place, it started to feel like we had been here forever. 10 years on, the coffee machine upgraded, many new faces later and warehouse space now heaving – we are celebrating our 10 year anniversary of the birth of Dreamwave Events tomorrow!

Paul and Dave are awesome bosses.  This makes the team feel more like family rather than a workplace we must go to to earn our keep.   I feel the in-house atmosphere and the fact that we all know what we are doing (this helps greatly!) combined with the professionalism of the company mean that 10 years on Dreamwave Events is a force to be reckoned with in the sound and lighting industry.  We have separated the business into two sides;  Dreamwave Lighting and Dreamwave DJ’s.

Like all companies, our journey started at the beginning being a small company but with high aspirations.  Fully aware that most companies collapse within their first two years of trading, 10 years is an amazing achievement.  Never to rest on ones laurels though, the guys are always looking at ways to move forward with new ideas to lead the market into the next trend.

I really, really, REALLY want to be more specific.  But I guess you’re going to have to watch this space for future announcements.  For now, this blog post is to literally say “Happy Birthday to us!” and pat ourselves on the back for reaching this mega milestone.

Armistice Ball 2018 – Praising what is lost, makes remembrance dear

On Saturday 10th November 2018, The Hangar at Milsoms Kesgrave Hall was dressed for the occasion to celebrate the 100th anniversary milestone of Armistice.  The amazing charity event raised an incredible £27,000 for ABF soldiers charity during Armistice Ball 2018.

Dreamwave Events’ Part to Play

Being fabulous friends with the Milsoms Group, we had to be involved in Armistice Ball 2018!  As well as donating our Evening DJ Service as a charity Auction Prize; one of our show stopping Dreamwave DJ’s delivered a party to remember along with the Band of the Army Air Corps during the evening’s escapades.

Preparations began days before with all the suppliers working together to make it a night to remember with stunning aesthetics! Our Dreamwave lighting technicians produced a jaw-dropping geometric hanging pendant lamp arrangement creating a key focal point during the event.

Dreamwave Events also provided full sound production for the event along with poignant gobo projections and a masterful illumination of the First World War bi-plane from Stow Maries Airfield creating a key central feature using our high quality up-lighting.

Happy Birthday Dreamwave Events!

9 years old today! It barely seems likes yesterday that I had my first day in our much smaller office 7 years ago.  Time has really flown and now the company is celebrating another birthday and is now almost in double figures!

Dreamwave’s Birthday – An important Milestone.

Today marks the foundation day of the business.  Every age is enchanting and the journey from Dreamwave’s birth until now has been one hell of a ride.   I caught up with the inspirations of the business, Dave and Paul and the one’s who carry the story of reaching these heights of success.

“We are so proud that our hard work has paid off and Dreamwave Events has grown to where it is today.  We feel we have built a company with a solid reputation of professionalism, creativity and reliability.  We could not ask for a better team to be part of this and can only see more exciting ventures on the horizon!”

Our Story in Short

17th April 2008 was the day marked in history when Dave and Paul joined forces to form Dreamwave Events!  We saw our reputation of providing a fantastic party expand.  Alongside our experienced and approachable individuals, Dreamwave Events cultivated a strong position within the Wedding and Party DJ entertainment industry.  As we saw the business soar, Dreamwave Events naturally evolved into expanding it’s services into professional lighting where we have proved to be an unstoppable force in Essex, Suffolk, London and surrounding areas.  Our warehouse is now stacked with top quality sound and lighting equipment producing first rate installations that will knock your socks off!

What our clients think

It has taken this time to build up our name as a source of quality and professionalism.  The support from our clients and referrals from venue:

“Dave, Spike, Paul, Carina and the whole team are so easy to work with and they totally understood what we wanted to achieve during our meetings, delivering it in spades.
If you are looking for quality music and/or lighting and decoration for your venue, then we would have no hesitation in recommending Dreamwave.” Jim Carter

Our Birthday; Another Year Older

This year is proving to be yet another amazing year for us and I want to embrace and celebrate the achievements for the business.  A huge thank you goes to our Directors, Dave and Paul (Dreamave is a huge credit to your hard work); The employees (including me!); the venues and above all the HUGE support from clients. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

We will see you next year when we will see our 10 year anniversary with a huge celebration!

Paul Pollard – What I Want to be When I Grow Up

Our very own Paul Pollard is one half of the heart of  Dreamwave Events.  Certainly the calmer influence of our two co-directors;  Paul takes everything in his stride.  I think good ‘ole William Shakespeare describes him perfectly: “My crown is called content, a crown that seldom kings enjoy.”

Make no mistake, that whilst I describe Paul this way, he absolutely doesn’t lack ambition.  Without the driving force of himself and his partner in the business, Dave; Dreamwave Events would definitely not be where it is today.

DJ Paul Pollard Dreamwave Events Essex Suffolk

A snippet about Paul Pollard

Our hairless wonder is indeed a chief ingredient in the day to day running of Dreamwave Events.  His secure backbone provides the rudimentary foundations for the team both in the office; out in the field providing DJ entertainment at weddings and parties or building creative lighting installations.  Born in North Essex, Paul shared his childhood antics with my now husband.  Consequently, after getting to know Paul myself, he and Dave asked me to join them working at Dreamwave following the birth of my sprog lets.  A great friend, boss and godfatherly influence to my son; Paul is an individual you certainly want to meet.

Lets find out more…. The interview with Paul Pollard

Since Dreamwave begun, it has quickly evolved into also providing lighting hire weddings and events: What direction do you see DWE going from here?

Dreamwave lighting has evolved quickly since its introduction back in 2015.  I think it was the natural progression for us to move into this area of the industry as we are creative with our ideas and always looking for new fresh looks.  That said we have our own style which I’ve always felt is a mixture of vintage style with a modern twist. Where from here? The sky’s the limit isn’t it!

What part of the business do you enjoy and why?

To be honest I love the day to day running of the business.  No day is the same whether it be on the road, in the office or constructing new concepts in the warehouse.  It also helps that I’m working with my best buddies, we have a good laugh along the way and work great as a team!

Could you have imagined when you started Dreamwave with Dave that it would be where it is today? Would you have done anything differently?

To be honest no.  I can remember taking on our warehouse and thinking we’ve got to pay for this each month! But we made it work and our hard work has got us to where we are today.  I don’t believe in looking back to see if anything would have been done differently, that’s in the past and I just want to look forward to the next chapter.

If Dreamwave Events carries on in it’s current flow, you can take early retirement! On a serious note, where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I wish!!! 10 year’s time…….well…..who knows.  We have many ideas going forward for different areas of Dreamwave yet to be released which we are currently working on.  So there’s lots to come!  Stay tuned!

Entering the Hangar through a fiery flare of festivities into a glittering frozen world.  This glamorous affair offered fantastic entertainment from atmospheric music mixed by our Dreamwave DJ’s to live beats from  Hype Delux.  With climatic scenery during an exquisite three course dinner and fantastic entertainment giving the opportunity to dance the night away – this event had very aspect covered for a successful evening.

Real Wedding, Le Talbooth, Essex – Rebecca and Samuel

Rebecca and Sam set their date for their wedding day at Le Talbooth in Essex.  For me, the best way to describe their day in a nutshell is unsurpassed thoughtfulness.   Attention to detail was given to every aspect of their wedding day.  There were so many individual touches that really made their wedding intimate and unique.

The Wedding Planning

After Sam’s proposal in Thailand in November 2015, they got cracking onto the wedding planning.

The Venue – Le Talbooth

With the natural beauty of the River Stour as it’s canvas, Le Talbooth is one of the foremost wedding venues in Colchester.  Then they had the added bonus of Milsom Weddings acting as their host.  With their multitude of experience and list of professional recommended suppliers; Rebecca and Samuel’s wedding planning was off to a great start!

“The venue itself is absolutely stunning (even in the rain) and we knew we could do as little or as much as we wanted and it would still look amazing. That combined with the amazing reputation the restaurant has for luxurious cuisine, and the odd glass of champagne thrown in, just confirmed to us that this was it.”

Outside Le Talbooth Essex Wedding Venue

Lighting and Décor at Le Talbooth with Dreamwave Events

“Also with Le Talbooth, one of the main things that really drew us even more to the venue, was that Dreamwave was one of their recommended suppliers.  I love a good Instagram stalk and as soon as I had a proper browse, I knew that Dreamwave would be able to make our wedding even more special.  I knew they could take our wedding to the next level.  The whole team  just “got” what we were going for and could not have been more helpful in recommending ideas of their own.”

Dreamwave did the whole entrance walkway and full marquee ceiling in beautiful fairy lights (a must in my opinion if you get married at Le Talbooth – even during the day they looked so pretty).  They also supplied our S&R letter lights, the monogram dance floor sticker and  uplighters – they were simply incredible!!

“Many people recommended that I download Pinterest, as it would really help me find some ideas that were slightly different and out of the ordinary.  One thing that I saw that I loved, was a lot of American weddings had these graphics on the dance floor; that suddenly became a must have for the wedding.  I had never seen any pictures of weddings in Essex that had done this before.  This made me want it even more as I felt like it was totally unique and original to us.  When we approached Dreamwave with my idea they were so helpful and asked what design we were thinking of and straight away I knew that the guest book design with our monogram would look amazing.  On the day, nearly every guest said to me how amazing the dancefloor looked, and it was a real wow factor, in my opinion.”

The Dress

Rebecca had a clear idea of what her wedding dress was going to look like and traipsed the dress shops on a mission to find it.  After a few bad experiences she found “the one” at Amorae in Ongar.

“Like any girl I had spent hours leading up to the appointment looking at the website and picking out my favourites.  I tried one of them on first – lets just say it wasn’t the one! That’s when Maria at the shop said  “can I pick a dress for you”.  Now I need to set the scene here; my family and I were in a big room with a whole mirrored wall, and in one corner was a small space with a curtain that went around where you got into the dresses.  As Maria was zipping me into this dress, without even seeing myself in the mirror, I knew that this was it.  When I saw myself in the mirror, the tears started.  I loved the way it fitted my body; the traditional lace; subtle sparkle and beading – everything was perfect.  I really felt like the best version of myself.   I saw myself marrying Sam in this dress -my dress.  It was love at first sight”

Personal Touches

“We really wanted the wedding to look timeless and elegant and that really drove all of our choices when planning and selecting for the wedding.  Sam always wanted to wear black tie and I have always loved the idea of bridesmaids in black and my dress pure white.  Like any couple we wanted our wedding to be personal to us, whilst remaining traditional.  After we found the venue and church we found an amazing stationer, Jacqui at Print for LoveShe had this beautiful wedding set named the Hayworth.  That’s where the biggest and only theme you may say came from – S&R.”

“The thing on the day that I was most proud of was my order of service at the church.  Due to my performing background, a family friend suggested that I should do it like a program you would get at a West End show.  I created the whole thing myself, including a ‘Who’s who in our wedding party’, fun facts about both myself and Sam along with some embarrassing childhood photos, ‘from our first date to our wedding day’ .  I also included a few pages of our favourite photos telling the story of our four years together, and so much more – it had 20 pages!  It was my pride and joy.  However, my favourite thing of all, although time consuming, was when they all arrived from the printers  I wrote inside each service book an individual hand written message to each guest from us both that was totally unique for each person. They went down an absolute treat, everyone loved them!!”

The Day of the Wedding, Le Talbooth

The Ceremony

After a hearty family meal at Milsoms Restaurant in Dedham with the family, Rebecca managed to get a good nights sleep before her wedding day in preparation for her wedding day…Eeeek!  Initially the morning was very calm – with a bottle of champagne to help Rebecca, her mum and her three bridesmaids get ready, everyone felt relaxed.

“I still think even then that it hadn’t really sunk in that I was getting married… it was only when it was time to get in my dress, that that all changed. Suddenly the room got very hot and I remember actually saying to Chris (my lovely videographer) “Oh my god, im actually getting married, I think I am going to be sick”.  This is not because I had any regrets, I just suddenly felt this wave of overwhelming emotion, and in that moment i realized that this was it – I was getting married!  In the car to the church, my dad held my hand and told me how happy he was that I was marrying Sam, it was a moment I will never forget.”

“Arriving at the church, was a blur and before I knew it, the bridesmaids had left me and it was just me and my mum standing at the doors of the church, waiting for the Bridal Chorus to start. As the music started, we both shed a few tears and then it all becomes a real blur. Walking down the aisle, all I wanted to do was focus on Sams face, I don’t remember even seeing anyone else and I know it sounds cheesy but even in that big church surrounded by over one hundred people, it really felt like we were the only two people in the room.”

Rebecca and Sam worked so hard to make their wedding day into their vision.  Every detail was thought about and it really showed in all aspects of the day.  I loved the personal touches included.  Using Dreamwave’s Complete Wedding Day DJ and Lighting Hire Services meant that we were providing background music during the Wedding Breakfast.  Their entrance song into the Marquee was West Ham’s “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” for her soon to be husband (I might add that Sam begged for something West Ham to be included throughout the wedding day – which Rebecca did politely decline!).  I loved that Rebecca’s dad took on the Master of Ceremonies role – for me, its these subtle points that make the day intimate.

“When we arrived to Le Talbooth in our vintage Rolls Royce,  Dan (our photographer) whisked us quickly into the marquee so we could see it before it was filled with our friends and family but also so he could get some great photos of us, whilst the marquee was empty.   I always had a strong picture in my mind of what I wanted the marquee to look like.  In preparation for the wedding, I am sure Sams neck must of ached for the continuous nodding and agreeing to all of my ideas.  I don’t think he was actually listening to me most of the time – typical man!  When we saw the marquee for the first time on the day, he could not of been more thrilled and loved every little detail, most of which I am surprised that he even picked up on.  Another personal touch that Sam also loved, was instead of table names, we marked each table number with photos of us at that particular age.  I loved seeing all of my hard work come together.  It was incredible and it actually looked better than I even imagined it would.”

The Flowers

“Our flowers were beautiful, I always said the bigger the better and Stacey from Designer Flowers Essex certainly did not disappoint. My bouquet was made of pure white lisianthus and hydrangea.  Inside the marquee Stacey added roses, peonies and several types of foliage complete with hanging candles.  We also had four separate arrangements to frame both entrances to the marquee.  Lanterns and candles lined the steps down to the lawn and not to mention our beautiful floral frame for the table plan, which was another must for the day.”

The Cake

“Our five tier wedding cake was from Cookie Delicious.  I designed it alongside Amy and it was a complete original design in pure white.  I loved the individual handmade flowers and damask pattern.   It tasted just as good as it looked, from chocolate to lemon to the traditional fruit cake, every tier was yummy!”

Stationary and Social Media

Print for Love created all of our table plan, menu cards and place cards continuing on from our invitation design – for the day we created two personalised snapchat geofilters for our guests to use and Jacqui also created special cards to go on each table to inform guests of how to use them and to use or hashtag #meetthemccarthys when posting any photos on social media.

This is where I have some advice to my fellow brides –

“Try to relax and enjoy the wedding breakfast.  I mean don’t get me wrong,  everything was stunning and that combined with the music, the room just had a real buzz and electricity.  However, I couldn’t help but find myself looking around during the starters, trying to make sure everyone was having a good time, when really I should have concentrated on myself and my new husband.  Sam read me like a book and seeing I was a tad overwhelmed, he whisked me outside to have a quiet moment.  Everyone had told me to enjoy every second; but sometimes I found myself trying to take every moment in that I wasn’t actually being in the moment – if that makes sense.  After our quick team chat outside, I was back in the game, with a glass of pink champagne in hand and we were going round from table to table mingling with our guests – a brilliant suggestion from my husband.”

The Evening Party for the Wedding, Le Talbooth

For the evening party, Rebecca and Sam were not afraid to play it modern with energised décor and contemporary pink up-lighting that punctuate perfectly with the warm golden traditional elements.

“The evening part of the wedding just flew by.  My bridesmaid Maddy and school friends surprised us both with the most amazing wedding present; it was a compilation video of lots of our friends singing along to different parts of ‘a town called malice’ – the reason why this song is a long story!  It was so thoughtful and it tied so many incredible, funny moments that I had shared with my friends together.  It is something I will never forget – plus I now have a copy at home.”

The First Dance

Then it was our first dance…  from day one we always had a song – ‘Just the way you are’ by Barry White.  This came around after a drunken dance at a party when we first got together. However we were also keen on  ‘Love’ by Nat King Cole, which I normally dance around the kitchen whilst cooking dinner.  For our first dance we really struggled with which one to go with and decided on the first.  Much to Sams surprise on the day, I actually had my friend mix the two together – I will never forget his face when the track changed and everyone started singing along. Our first dance was so special to us and it was by far my favourite moment of the day.  I then shared a dance with my dad.  My favourite film is ‘Father of the Bride’ and the theme tune is ‘Just the way you look tonight’.  Like any father and daughter, we have a very special relationship and it is something I will treasure forever.

The Party!

“And then the party started!! Before the big day we had to send Dreamwave over a list of the running of the day, plus a list of any “must plays” for the evening.  Me and Sam love music.  You will always find my friends and family on the dance floor till the end of the party.  We are normally the ones being asked to leave!  I just have to say that Darren (our DJ) certainly did not disappoint.  The next day we had a million messages and nearly everyone said “OMG how amazing was your DJ!?” Darren definitely added so much to our special day.  I mean, what’s a wedding without a good party!?  The dance floor was packed from start to finish, from the young to the old, everyone was having such a great time.  In true fashion nobody wanted it to be over, to the point where one of my best friends stood on our S&R floor sticker and said “NO, you cannot take this off until we have all left!” – sorry about that Dreamwave!!

Before we knew it, it was the next morning, the dress was in a heap on the floor, I had a slight headache, and it was all over.  I remember laying there thinking, how was that yesterday!?  I have never known a day to go by so fast and I don’t think I ever will again. It goes without saying that it really was the best day ever and we cannot wait to spend the rest of our lives together as Mr and Mrs McCarthy!”

Advice to future Bride and Grooms

“The most important advice I can give is to surround yourself with people who you love and trust.  This is by far the biggest day of your life and everyone from your bridesmaids, to the groomsmen, to the florist, photographer, should get that and be there to support you.  If anything, all of these people are bringing something very special to your day, so try to bear that in mind when selecting who you go with.

Please believe me when I say this will the best day of your life, whether it rains or you have glorious sunshine, try to remember that actually none of it really matters, all that matters is you are marrying the love of your life and that this is your special day, no one else’s.”

What Should a Wedding DJ Set Up Look Like?

Having been a bride myself, I know how most want the day perfect and we tend to be meticulous to details for the big wedding day.  But whist thinking about all these minute details, us brides then go forward and book a DJ for the evening and think “job done” without it even occurring to us what the DJ set up will look like.  Why would it? Well, lets face it, most of us don’t really have a clue about which speaker system is what and where it would be best to position those moving heads.  All we want is a darn good party where the “kids” can bop away and our granny’s can shake their hips later in the evening.   We entrust this to the expert DJ.

Now working for a DJ and Lighting company, I now have a basic understanding of the vastness of quality in DJ set up.  Believe me, this varies completely from one end of the spectrum to the other!

Keep the DJ Set Up Simple

It is a wedding after all, not a full blown rave.  When I think of a wedding DJ Set Up, I think of a tidy booth with some simple lighting that will produce the desired ambience of romance for first dance and a good family friendly party atmosphere in the evening.  For me, less is more.  I believe buying into a few pieces with better construction.  A colossal 80’s style over-head truss with multiple glaring lights, huge unnecessarily sized speakers and a smoke machine does not scream wedding party to me!

Dreamwave Event’s Evening DJ Set Up includes a choice of booth, discreet speakers, some moving party lighting for the dance floor and an LED wash on the wall behind the DJ in a colour of your choice.

So What does this mean?

The DJ Booth is where the guys work their magic on the decks.  Dreamwave offer a choice “look” from the classic star-cloth DJ booth to our signature Decks-on-Show where you can see you DJ mixing live bringing them into the party.  Having a vintage themed rustic wedding?  We also have our popular rustic styled custom designed pallet booths to match your theme.

The lighting behind the DJ is just a wash of your choice of colour on the wall.   The party lighting will shine onto the dance floor.  Both are perfect to create the ideal wedding party atmosphere.

For an evening party, this is enough.  You can then move forward to enhance the mood further with additional wedding suitable lighting such as fairy lights, festoons, gobo projections and LED Candles.

No Need to Pop My Ear Drums

Generally a wedding venue seeks to be romantic and welcoming to entice the prospective bride and grooms.  The party room is not going to be massive and most will probably look to hold a maximum of 200 people, where some are much smaller.  A good wedding DJ will make sure their equipment caters for the venue.  They will balance their music volume so that it is loud enough to give a darn good party, but also low enough for guests to enjoy a good natter off the dance floor.

I know of some venues that have sound limiters installed to help control the over zealous DJ.  A good DJ will not trip this off.  Could you imagine being half way through your favourite song, busting your best moves on the dance floor and then everything suddenly stops as your DJ could not control the music level! Embarrassing for the DJ….and what a way to kill a party!

Don’t let a sound limiter scare you off from your dream wedding venue.  As long as your DJ is aware it’s there and know the settings – your evening party will be good to go!

Bright Light, Bright Light!

Lighting is of course a key feature to any party.  It is easy for a DJ  to get over enthused about party lighting.  They have to consider that from the outside looking onto the dance floor, the lighting may look awesome, but as a bride, I really don’t want my family and wedding guests blinded!

Dreamwave used discreet and more then sufficient party lighting and the LED colour wash reflects onto the dance floor to help create that party atmosphere.  As mentioned the mood can always be further enhanced with use of suitable lighting and décor.

Cut the Clutter

Be safe not sorry!  Us brides don’t want to have to worry about ugly wires and yucky bright extension cords left exposed ruining our once perfect wedding venue! Dreamwave tape down all their wiring and is neat and tidy to avoid hazards and the visual abhorrence.

With Dreamwave’s fantastic and wedding friendly DJ set up, their experience and professionalism has surged them to the top choice of DJ entertainment for weddings in Essex and Suffolk.
